Nation: Republic of Arcadia
Role: Fleet Command Ship/Fast Battleship
Unique Features: Built-in armored flight deck housing three squadrons of small-winged fighter craft and assault shuttle boats, harmonic's core and CIC center for squadron and battlefield information management
Illustrated above is one of the newest lines of ships being brought online and into service for the Republic of Arcadia's Legion fleets. While the cruiser is the mainstay of most Republic fleets, the Republic Senate sought an answer to the problem of projecting the force of a battleship that could quickly and easily move from one hot spot to another. The battlecruiser was the solution that was devised.
Normally, Republic cruisers serve as the smallest capital ships that could make their presence known as well as host a small contingent of legionnaire cohorts; serving as both warship and transport. The battlecruiser, however, has a decidedly unique role. The heart of the design in the battlecruiser was to have a ship that was faster and more maneuverable than a battleship but also packed more of a punch than the standard cruiser. Though considered an up armored and up gunned cruiser, the ship technical avoids the labeling of ‘fast battleship’ due to Republic aerial doctrine focus. Incorporating significantly heavier artillery guns and an enlarged flight deck (most standard cruisers only have enough room for a single escort squadron), the battlecruiser serves as a workhouse multi-purpose ship for the Legion. Functioning as a ‘fast battleship’, it is a formidable warship that outclasses many ships of equal or lesser tonnage and due to her size has a significantly larger legionnaire compliment than most ships. It is also the first non-battleship class airship that incorporates a CIC center and thus is more than adequate to serve as a flagship for squadrons or a fleet. In addition, the ship is capable of launching a small force of fighter-craft on par with escort carriers and plane tenders.
Distinguishing features of this ship include but are not limited to: twelve 12-inch artillery guns, 11 Quad .50 cal Maxon AA guns (5 on each side, 1 at the bow), and 8 twin-linked 40mm bofors (4 on each side, upper deck). Standard compliment of fighter craft are 2 fighter-attack wings and a single torpedo bomber wing for heavy support against targets that could outclass the main ship. Also included are half a dozen or more Higgins assault boats for aerial or ground-centric operations.
Special Note: The inset picture shows the ship's harmonic’s 'landing net', a techno-magic barrier projected by the ship's harmonic’s core and her onboard Shaman compliment. Landings on carriers have been known to be difficult, and when you add an 'enclosed' deck it can be very nerve-wrecking and hazardous. To counter the restrictions of an enclosed armored flight deck, pilots are brought in for a landing via projected harmonics nets that slow down and guide fighter aircraft safely into the belly of the ship.
The harmonic's core is a unique feature on large capital ships and serves as the heart for ships designated into command and control roles. The core houses an attuned and very sensitive magic user who serves as the ‘operator’ and heart of the ship's computer core, in order to help facilitate control and management of the ship's CIC center to other elements of the fleet or squadron. This part of the ship is usually located in the most protected portion of the ship's lower deck, as well as having a compliment of Steam Golems and armored centurion armored infantry guarding the room at all times.
Also of particular note, this ship serves as the main floating ‘base ship’ of the heroes in my story.
